Clinical and Medical Oversight

A well-structured clinic thrives not only on professionalism and regulatory compliance but also on effective collaboration among providers and non-clinical staff. Setting up clinical oversight and medical governance within a practice is important to allow for efficient and timely decision making as well as ensuring individuals with specific roles are compliant with applicable laws, policies, and regulations. Common leadership roles in a medical practice include Medical Director and Privacy Officer.

Medical Director

A clinic’s Medical Director play a crucial role in overseeing clinical operations, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, and maintaining high standards of patient care. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC Accreditation Standards for Medical Director provides a good reference to use in assessing standards and criterion for a provider’s roles as a clinic’s medical director.

Privacy Officer

The clinic’s privacy officer ensures compliance with applicable data protection laws and regulations. This can be part of the medical director role as they have the responsibility for maintaining accuracy, security and disclosure of medical data use and storage in a practice.

The BC Physician Privacy Toolkit provides a comprehensive guide and tools to help privacy officers with compliance. The Toolkit has been prepared by the Doctors of BC, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC to meet their obligations under the Personal Information Protection Act.
