Why did you decide to enter the nursing profession?

From a very young age, I was interested in science and in interacting with the people. It was in my final year of high school that I had a chance to interact with the sister of a good friend of mine who was an ER nurse. She helped me to realize that I could blend my love of science with my desire to work with people in a nursing career.

How did you get to where you are today?

Many key people helped shape where I have ended up. I was fortunate to work on a busy surgical unit, which then led me to a busy ICU. A mentor encouraged me to try a little teaching along the way. After a stint in ICU, I was looking for a different pace after having my own children so I worked on a cardiology unit. After floating down to the Emergency Department (ED) on numerous occasions, I asked the manager if she would consider hiring me and she did. and fast forward 21 years later and I now have had an opportunity to work on a project implementing an electronic medical record in our regional emergency departments. It’s incredible the paths we take to find what we really love.

What has been the most rewarding thing in your nursing career?

Working with inspiring colleagues and having the opportunity to work in a variety of areas and develop expertise.

What has been the most challenging?

Adapting to the incredible change in technology over the past 33 years.

What advice would you give to new nurses?

Be engaged. Seek out mentors. Find your passion.
