Celebrating Pride!
In June we recognize Pride Month in acknowledgement of members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ who continue to struggle for equality. Research shows that 2SLGBTQIA+ often have unmet health needs and may be less likely to seek access to both emergency and preventative health services due to stigma and discrimination within health care. 2SLGBTQIA+ are at a greater risk for social isolation and exclusion which can have negative impacts on health.
Enshrined in nursing care as part of the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics is the principle of promoting social justice. Nurses demonstrate this by ensuring that human rights, equity, and fairness are upheld. Nurses also embrace non-judgemental care as a foundation of practice making them well positioned to advocate for policy changes that can positively impact the care and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
During Pride month we celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and stand in allyship in ensuring their voices are heard, championing their health care needs, and supporting dignity, equal rights, self-affirmation, and visibility in all communities across British Columbia.
